Telenor chooses Ericsson as network supplier

Norwegian-based Telenor has chosen Ericsson as their network distribution supplier on five-year contract to provide communication services to Myanmar.

Ericsson will accordingly provide required equipment and accessories for Telenor’s mobile communication networks, as well as related management services.

The agreement was reached last year for Ericsson to provide Telenor’s Radio Access Network (RAN) for the internal network. Telenor expects to have more than 90 percent of the country population covered by their network.

Ericsson conducted a study in 2012 on how Myanmar’s mobile communication affected business prospects. The study shows new communication licenses will increase the country’s GDP between 1.5 and 9 percent.

According to the study conducted on how mobile communication enterprises affect job creation, the new businesses are likely to appoint about 66,000 full-time employees while other related enterprises will provide more than 24,000 jobs.

Telenor and Oreedoo were given official operating licenses on February 5 and have been constructing communication towers, and fixing equipment to start providing their services six months after being licensed.

Yet there are difficulties to make the service ready on time since permission to the construction of towers is taking more time than expected.
