The airline’s managing director, Than Tun, told local media that Myanmar Airways is negotiating with ATR in France to purchase the aircraft that will be used on domestic routes.
“We are also talking to ATR about setting up a spare parts factory for ATR aircraft in Myanmar,” he said.
Myanmar Airways, is the only state-owned airline that serves 26 cities with a fleet of nine aircraft- – three ATR 72, one ATR 42, three Beech 1900D and two Embraer 190.
US-based GE Capital Aviation Services, a financial services unit of General Electric Company, is supporting Myanmar Airways with technical know-how.
Formed in 1948, the airline has been plagued with a bad maintenance and a poor safety record. Its main role during the military junta’s regime was to take shares in all other airlines in the country on behalf of the military government to ensure they shared in the profits and revenue.
However, over the last two years, since the country embraced democracy, Myanmar Airways has made reforms and entered into partnerships with companies that can help it build a viable business. It recently signed an agreement with GE Capital Aviation Services to lease 10 new Boeing aircraft during the Singapore Air Show.
According to the contract with GE Capital Aviation Services it will lease six- new Boeing 737-800 sand four Boeing 73- 8 Max from June 2015 to 2020.
