SEA Games attract tourists

BANGKOK, 16 December 2013: Kasikorn Research Centre says the sports spectacular, SEA Games, hosted by Myanmar, should boost arrivals to the country to around 1.35 million and generate US$800 million by year-end.

The centre said The 27th SEA Games 2013, 11 to 22 December, will help bring the once-reclusive nation back into the international spotlight for the first time since it opened up the country.

“Myanmar’s open-door policy is attracting international tourists and also foreign investors more than ever before,” the bank report noted.

The SEA Games, are also taking place during the peak travel season and this should push tourist arrivals for the first time past the 1 million mark in Myanmar.

The centre estimates that international tourist arrivals to Myanmar will reach 1.35 million this year, beating the 1.06 million reported for 2012, and generating at least US$800 million in tourism income for the country.

Hosting the 2013 SEA Games has bolstered growth in several economic sectors, following accelerated development in infrastructure, travel accommodation, tourist attractions and services.

It is expected that Myanmar will post a robust growth of at least 6.8% in 2013 and 7% in 2014.

“This, in turn, will help support Thai exports to Myanmar to achieve a 25% growth in 2013, equivalent to around US$3.9 billion, and possibly a 20% to 28% growth during 2014,” it said.

After the 2013 SEA Games, Myanmar will take on an important role as the Chair of ASEAN next year on the theme, “Moving Forward in Unity toward a Peaceful and Prosperous Community”.

Kasikorn Research Centre is a subsidiary company of Kasikorn Bank, which conducts tourism and business research mainly on Thailand’s economy including tourism with reliable recommendations and indicators on business prospects.
