Old power cables in Yangon to be replaced next year - YESB

YANGON—The Yangon Electrical Supply Board is planning to replace old power cables currently used in the city with new ones in the 2014-15 fiscal year, the YESB’s deputy chief engineer, Ye Myint Htay, said yesterday.

“Most cables installed in Yangon are more than 30 years old and need replacement. We expect to replace them soon,” he said.

The YESB has not yet decided the amount of budget to be spent because the project is still in the planning stages, he added.

“We have connected both underground and overhead cables. At the moment, overhead cables are the majority. We will use the cables that have long resistance so that they can be used even if they are hit by branches falling from the trees,” Ye Myint Htay said.

The Ministry of Electric Power will increase electricity fees in next fiscal year to Ks 35 per unit for the usage of one unit to 100 units, and Ks 50 for the use of 101 units and above.

Nearly 45 percent of Yangon residents use 100 units of electricity, while 26.6 percent use between 100 and 200 units of electricity.

Nearly 20.21 percent use between 201 and 500 units, while the remaining 5.89 percent use 501 units and above, according to a survey.
