Myanmar company receives shipment of stones from China

When the Millionaire Engineering and Industrial Company ordered 20 tonnes of micro plastic pellets, it did not expect to find stones instead.

The company signed a sales contract on November 20 with Chinese company Qingdao Jinding Metal Import and Export Ltd. for the pellets. The merchandise was shipped by Wanhai Shipping Company and arrived at Htee Tan wharf on December 9.

When the container was finally taken to the warehouse and opened, company staff were surprise to find bags full of ordinary stones. The owner immediately informed customs department who came to inspect the bags.

"We informed the customs as by rules and regulations. When we informed about it to Chinese Embassy, they told us to meet on December 17," said Than Soe from Millionaire Engineering and Industrial Company.

"They [the pellets] are worth of about US$ 30,000 including tax. We can’t tolerate that sort of behaviour. And I want to say that other companies need to be careful. The container has been sealed by the shipping line," he added.

It is still unclear whether the Chinese company, the shipping company or the customs department were to blame for swapping stone bags for the micro plastic pellets.

Officials from the customs department also reported to their headquarters.

"If a fault is found at Myanmar side, they will take action against it. Customs has also to help us find out who is responsible for the fraudulence," Than Soe concluded.
