Cruise ships’ visits to Yangon on ten-year record high

Two international cruise ships carrying hundreds of tourists arrived at Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa (MITT) and Bo Aung Kyaw Port in Yangon on Friday, according to the Myanmar Port Authority (MPA).

“The MS. AZARAMA JOURNEY Cruise was berthed at the MITT, with 700 tourists on board on December 27. The MS. VOYAGER Cruise that carried 500 tourists was berthed at Bo Aung Kyaw Port,” said an official from the MPA.

These would be the last cruise ships that visit Yangon ports in 2013. With a total of eight cruise ships carrying 4000 visitors to Yangon this year marked the highest in the past ten years.

“By the end of December 2013, a total of 8 cruise ships visited Myanmar. The ships carried a total of more than 4000 tourists. This is the ten-year record high number of tourists visiting Myanmar via cruise ships,” said the MPA official.

Majority of these tourists are from the United States, French and European countries. Tourists on long holidays usually extend their visit to Bagan, Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin cities in Upper Myanmar.

Most of the cruise ships that visit Yangon are berthed at the MITT port, while some take berths at Bo Aung Kyaw and Nanthida terminals.
