World Bank to launch community programme in southern Myanmar

The World Bank will soon launch a community programme in some villages in Kyunsu Township, Tanintharyi Region, in Southern Myanmar, sources say.

World Bank officials have already done a feasibility study. A team comprised of three World Bank officials and Khant Zaw, a director of the Rural Development department went on a field trip to the villages on Monday and Tuesday and met with local residents.

“They [the team] met with the Kyunsu Township Administrator and Katalu villagers separately on November 18. They also observed Hteinchaung Village, Nawarat Lake and dams. In their view, the villagers need to hold a meeting to form a management committee,” a Katalu villager said.

The committee needs to use the World Bank’s assistance properly and implement rural development tasks honestly, he said. “If the World Bank finds the committee’s plans unfair, they will stop the aid. The bank will also conduct training for financial management. The programme may be launched in early January,” he added.

The team also visited Letaw village on Tuesday to study the regional products, lifestyle and income of local residents, and how they earn their living.

Since Kyunsu Township is regarded as the least developed township in Tanintharyi Region, the World Bank is planning to provide assistance to 20 village tracts in the township.

The World Bank, which has been implementing community drive development projects, has planned to provide US$ 80 million (Ks 77.93 billion) to 640 least-developed villages in Myanmar.
