Myanmar to provide 24-hour electricity during SEA Games

YANGON—Myanmar will provide 24-hour electricity to the entire nation during 27th SEA Games to be held in December, according to the Ministry of Electric Power.

The SEA Games’ competitions will be held at the major cities—Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, and Mandalay—as well as at Ngwesaung Beach in Ayeyawady Region.

“We will provide 24-hour electricity all over the country during the SEA Games,” Maung Maung Latt, vice-chairman of the Yangon City Power Supplying Board, said on Thursday.

“We are planning to fulfill the requirements for supplying 24-hour electricity in the SEA Games,” said Ye Myint Htay, assistant chief engineer from the Power Supply Department.

More than 9,000 athletes including team managers, coaches, and responsible persons from the ASEAN countries will participate in the SEA Games.

Recently, mass rallies against the doubling of electricity fees took place in some states and regions.

Despite an urgent proposal that the Parliament reduce electricity fee hikes, President Thein Sein sent a message to the Union Parliament on November 14, saying that the increased power fees would take effect starting from the next fiscal year.
