BURMA: Europe supports sustainable garment project

A new project aimed at promoting and supporting the sustainable production of garments in Burma/Myanmar has been launched with European support.

Germany’s Sequa GmbH is lead partner in SMART Myanmar – SMEs for Environmental Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency – supported by the UK’s Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry, business and industry organisations in Myanmar, and The Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP).

The project will aim to increase the international competitiveness of SMEs in the sector as the US and EU lift economic sanctions against Myanmar, ushering in growth for textile and garment exports.

SMART Myanmar will work closely with companies and organisations in the country, building capacity and increasing skills, as well as helping the development of export and marketing strategies for the garment sector.

Specific actions will include a range of training initiatives, including a study tour to Europe for stakeholders, and the identification of showcase companies and benchmarking for best in class companies.
