Global operators wooing MPT, executive says

Global telecom operators have expressed interest in working with government-owned operator Myanmar Post and Telecommunications even before its privatization, its general manager said without disclosing the names of the firms.

Media reports, and industry observers, have identified Vodafone and Orange as two of the leading suitors of MPT but Kyaw Soe Win declined to confirm or deny this.

Kyaw Soe Win insisted that MPT had not made any offers to foreign operators.

He did say, however, that MPT is partnering with Orange to install a mobile roaming business that will be launched ahead of December’s SEA Games. It will allow international customers to access their numbers in Myanmar.

MPT is currently a government agency under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology but its privatization will begin after the rules and regulations of the new Telecom Law are issued.

Kyaw Soe Win said the foreign operators are not waiting for privatization before making offers.

Tin Win, CEO of domestic operator Yatanarpon Teleport, told a telecom forum in the capital last month that domestic operators need foreign partners for long-term investment. The industry faces a critical shortage of skilled engineers and technicians, he said.

Norway-based Telenor and Qatar-based Ooredoo won tenders for two new telecom at the end of June. They will compete with two domestic operators, MPT and YTP Teleport, for a share of what is expected to be one of the world’s fastest growing telecom markets.

It is widely expected that both MPT and YTP will need foreign partners to compete with Telenor and Ooredoo in the new liberalized market.
