In order to strengthen its presence in the Myanmar market, Acer will have the Acer Foundation donate PCs to the country through an APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) Project led by Stan Shih. A donation ceremony will be held at the Taiwan-Myanmar Cooperation and Exchange Forum in Taipei on October 23.
Acer has strong brand influence in Southeast Asia and is currently the largest PC brand vendor in Thailand and Indonesia with market shares at around 30%.
In Myanmar, the penetration rate of PCs is only 2% and smartphones 7%, showing that the country still has a lot space for further growth. Acer is the largest PC vendor in Myanmar, followed by Lenovo and Dell, while Huawei is the largest smartphone vendor, followed by Samsung and HTC.
To promote domestic development, the Myanmar government is offering 8-years of extendable tax-free incentives to attract foreign investment. Several PC brands such as Acer, Lenovo, Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP) have all recently started expanding their channels, marketing and services in the country.
Although Acer and Asustek Computer currently enjoy good brand recognition in Southeast Asia, the companies will still need to strengthen their marketing in these countries to defend against Lenovo's strong challenges as the region is expected to start seeing rapid growth in 2015.
