Thailand to help upgrade Kengtung-Taunggyi Road

Shan state officials have agreed to cooperate with Thai entrepreneurs to upgrade Kengtung-Taunggyi road on Monday.

Shan State Chief Minister Sao Aung Myat made the decision during a meeting with Thai delegates led by Chiang Mai Governor Tanin Subhasae, due to insufficient budget from the Myanmar government to do their own upgrade.

Tanin Subhasae said the Kengtung-Taunggyi road could become a major road for tourism and trade and also help connect India and southern China.

Sao Aung Myat has also allowed Thai Airways to operate direct flights to Kengtung. Both sides discussed seven points for signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to link Kengtung and Chiang Mai sister cities, sharing resources for education, health, economic, tourism, sports, and social and cultural affairs.

Chiang Mai Governor said he will request approval from the authorities before signing the MOU before the end of the year.
