Myanmar expects 2m foreign tourists to visit this year

Myanmar is expecting to receive two million foreign tourists to the country by the end of this year, according to Vice President Sai Mauk Kham.

The statement was made at the ceremony of World Tourism Day held on September 27 in Nay Pyi Taw, the official capital, adding that there has been a sharp rise in the number of tourists visiting the country in the first eight months of this year, 58 percent up than the same period of last year.

"Last year, about 1.06 million foreign tourists visited the country. The number of tourists visiting the country in the first eight months of this year has passed the one million mark now. The number jumped up by 58 percent. The country has expected 1.8 million to two million tourists to visit this year," he said.

He also said in his speech delivered at the ceremony that safe transportation system, good-quality hotels, restaurants, and inns are basic needs for more tourists.

More tourists mean more income for the country and new job opportunities for local people, he stressed.

Myanmar now has 3,353 tour guides officially licensed, according to official data released by Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
