Just back from Burma, beating the crowds

Michael Feeley and Lisa Schwartz, Berkeley

Why we went: Burma has recently made travel easier. We wanted to see Burma before the projected increase in tourism.

Don't miss: Inle Lake and the cottage industry craftspeople. Don't miss the weavers and silversmiths.

Don't bother: Spending time in the city of Mandalay. There are beautiful places outside the city. The air in the city was very dirty and there were not that many interesting places to visit.

Coolest souvenir: Woven bags used for market shopping in the mountain areas. Had we known how many people love them, we would have bought a dozen.

Worth a splurge: We stayed at the Pristine Lotus Spa Resort on Inle Lake. A wonderful relaxing splurge on the final two days of our trip.

We wish we packed: Sturdy shoes that are easy to get on and off at each of the temples and pagodas.

Other comments: If you have the flexibility, spend more time in Bagan and less in Mandalay.
