Sagaing airports to be upgraded to encourage investment

Regional authorities plan to upgrade Kalay and Kathar Airports in Sagaing Region, upper Myanmar, to encourage economic development and accommodate more tourists.

Sagaing Region has been mainly an agricultural and timber producing area although mining companies are starting to take interest with foreign firms invested in the Kyayesintaung , Letpadaungtaung and Hteechaink areas.

“We will upgrade Kalay and Kathar airports into international standard,” said Aung San Myint, a member of Regional Government Committee.

Regional authorities also plan to build five bridges, low-cost housing, staff quarters, the extension of hydro power projects and a coal mining industrial zone within five years. They also aim to expand Sagaing's tourism industry.

“Sagaing Region plans to extend its tourism industry like other states and regions because not only increasing foreign tourist arrivals but also economic development in future,” said an official from Regional Government Committee.

Construction of those projects will be given first priority in Kalaywa, Homemaline and Sagaing townships. The region is extremely poor and still has a high rate of unemployment.
