International airlines to open direct flights to Myanmar

Three new international airlines are planning to fly direct to Myanmar starting in September this year, according to an official from Yangon International Airport.

The new airlines are Thailand-based Nok Air and Business Airlines and Singapore-based Tiger Airline.

“For these airlines to fly direct to Myanmar they have submit their plans to Civil Aviation Department under the Ministry of Transport,” said General Manager Win Ko of Yangon International Airport.

There are currently 22 international airlines flying direct to Myanmar and seven local airlines who fly internally. In the past, there were only 15 international airlines and increasing numbers of airlines have began launching direct flights from Japan, Qatar, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany and Singapore.

Airport authorities will discuss matters of landing times with the airline companies. The Civil Aviation Department said that international airlines must land only at night for their extended flights.

ASEAN countries such as Brunei and Vietnam are also discussing lunching direct flights to Myanmar.
