Matrade To Embark On Ict Mission To Myanmar

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade)will embark on an information communication technology (ICT) mission to Myanmar.

The mission from Aug 19-22 is to seek business opportunities in ICT infrastructure, e-government, healthcare, banking and finance, e-education and other ICT solutions, Matrade said in a statement today.

The highlight of the mission is an individual business matching session between Malaysian IT firms and their local counterparts.

Matrade said Malaysian IT companies had expressed keen interest in expanding their business into Myanmar after participating in a seminar on "Doing ICT Business" in Myanmar, organised by Matrade, last Wednesday.

Market researcher, International Data Corporation (IDC), has projected that IT spending in Myanmar is expected to reach US$233.56 million by 2016, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16 per cent over the forecast period of between 2011 and 2016.

The country's mobile penetration rate of nine per cent or 5.44 million mobile subscribers, for a population of 60 million inhabitants, present a huge business opportunity.

According to Matrade, with new ICT laws being drafted and initiatives by the Myanmar government to engage more foreign investments, the time is right for Malaysian IT firms to participate in the country's economic growth and position themselves early in the market as the preferred IT partners.

Malaysian companies are urged to register early for the mission or visit Matrade's website for details.
