Empty cans and bottles hit record border sales

Chinese merchants are now buying a large amount of empty cans and bottles from Myanmar through Muse checkpoint along Myanmar-China border, according to Myanmar’s Border Trade Department.

This is the first time Myanmar has exported empty cans and bottles to China, an official from the department said.

He said, “this year, Chinese merchants are unusually buying empty cans and bottles. The cans and bottles are flattened and exported through the border trade routes.”

China mainly imports agricultural products such as rice and maize grains from Myanmar. The border trade between the two countries hit US$2.74 billion in 2012-12.

The key trade routes along the Myanmar-China border include Chinshwehaw, Kanpattee, Lwaljal and Muse checkpoints. Two-month trade volume through Muse checkpoint alone has now reached $418 million this fiscal year.

Myanmar imports fertilizer, motorcycles, machineries and electronic products from China.
