Norway’s Telenor Group is prepared to invest in Myanmar’s telecommunication sector, Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice-President and Head of Asia operations of the group said in a conference held in April 29.
Telenor Group is the telecommunications company based in Norway, with
headquarters located at Fornebu, close to Oslo, the Norwegian capital.
Today, Telenor Group is mostly an international wireless carrier with
operations in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia, working
predominantly under the Telenor brand. Its 203 million subscribers made
it one of the largest mobile phone operators in the world.
The group is currently working as mobile operator of Thailand,
Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. They are among 12 companies
who have been called for tender by Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication
(MPT) and the group is intended to invest to start quickly on
modernizing telecommunication network in Myanmar if they have the
approval the telecommunication license by MPT.
“If we have the license, we will try to make ourselves the best in
Myanmar’s telecommunication sector. We can offer mobile internet and
online banking besides 20 kyats per minute for local phone call.
Thailand charges only 0.76 Baht per minute. We can make everyone to buy
phones with affordable prices here,” Sigve Brekke said.
The group will not cooperate with other company and will be invested
100%. They will construct their own communication network and SIM cards
manufacturing will be taken 6 months at least. The network
infrastructure will take time to construct for 7 months and all will be
done in one year time, he added.
Moreover the company will provide technical assistance to Myanmar’s universities later.
