The government is planning to draft a new energy policy based on the current Japanese model, said U Win Kyaing, a member of the Energy Development Committee, on March 9.
Energy
ministries and committees will take the advice of 24 trainees who
attended a forum for energy policy in Japan last week. Most participants
were ministers from the Ministry of Energy.
“We are drawing a
policy first, and then we will base the according laws and regulations
around the policy after,” U Win Kyaing said.
Daw Sain Sain, the
central executive member of the Renewable Energy Association Myanmar,
said that the REAM have learnt about the theory and practice of energy
policy in Japan.
The policy should focus on supplying rural areas with electricity, she said.
“I am sure this new policy will help achieve our goals and the government can support lighting up rural areas,” she said.
She
said that the policy should not centralise electricity to light up
rural Mynamar – namely, the government needs to install local
electricity producers by using biogas, hydropower or solar power in
rural areas instead of connecting to the national grid.
“The
government should support getting electricity to rural areas with money
and technical assistance, while local producers try to get electricity
to the areas,” Daw Sain Sain said.
U Than Htay, the minister for energy, has already started drafting the policy in Nay Pyi Taw, according to U Win Kying.
