US chain enters Myanmar

PHNOM PENH, 19 February 2013: Best Western International says it will open its first property in Myanmar later this year, claiming the move was possible in light of new investment rules and an acute shortage of hotel rooms.

Best Western Asia Pacific vice president, Glenn de Souza, said that Myanmar represents huge opportunities in the hotel sector especially in the mid-scale segment where it was severely under-supplied.

But he gave no details of the proposed property, its location, if any investment was required or the status of a management contract or franchise agreement.

However, if there is substance to the report, then it will be the first US chain to publicly confirm its intention to establish brands and management in the country.

Under sanctions that have now been partly lifted US hotels and tourism companies could not do business in the country. The first companies to enter the market, following elections, were Visa and other banking systems that are keen to establish a credit card market.

Mr de Souza’s claims were reported in an email sales pitch released Monday by the Myanmar International Hotel, Restaurant & Catering Equipment & Supplies Exhibition that will be held in Yangon, 6 to 8 November and organised by AMB Events, organiser of the CamHotel Expo in Phnom Penh and VietHotel Expo in Hanoi.
