YANGON, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar President U Thein Sein has
stressed investment in education sector development in the country,
saying that education is the most profitable investment for the nation,
official daily New Light of Myanmar reported Saturday.
Addressing rector and faculty members from Kalay University in Kalay on Friday, U Thein Sein mentioned the increased budget on education and health in the time of incumbent government.
"Myanmar universities are networking with prestigious seats of education from South Korea, Japan and so on including John Hopkins University," he said.
Regarding the drive for economic growth, he underlined the four main priorities -- establishing labor-intensive factories and workshops not only in major towns but also in townships; establishment of small and medium enterprises for production of value-added goods; setting up heavy industry utilizing own natural resources; and information technology development.
He called for establishment of training schools to nurture skilled labors, saying the sole responsibility of teachers is to accumulate human capital.
He stressed the need for English proficiency to be on par with global countries, demanding mastery civilized citizens.
In this academic year, a total of 4,697 day students and 3,409 distance education students, totaling 8,106 are learning at Kalay University.
