Myanmar plans to increase exports to US and EU

Myanmar government is preparing to increase export volume of its products to Western countries , including the US, after lifting the sanctions.

Myanmar Timber Merchants Association (MTMA) and the European Timber Trade Federation (ETF) held a workshop with a purpose to sign a MOU between Myanmar and Europe timber trading at the head office of Myanmar Timber Enterprise in Yangon on February 11.


"Myanmar timbers and furnished wood products will be exported soon to EU countries. MTMA and ETTF are working together for exporting process," the joint general secretary Bar Bar Cho of the MTMA said at the workshop.

ETTF is exporting 90 percent of the woods and wood products to European countries. The federation is a non-government federation, he added.

The qualified and legalized woods and wood products, testified by the ETTF will be exported to European countries and the United States.

Timber Legality Assurance System will be used as well. As a requirement, ETTF desires Myanmar to monitor on its forestry with Sustainable Forest Management before exporting timbers.

Myanmar is attempting to sign a deal with Europe and US for not only forestry products but also fish and fishery product.

Myanmar Fishery Federation (MFF) is planning to export volume on prawn and farm fish to Europe and US.

As of January 27 for this Fiscal year 2012-2013, Myanmar has exported US$532.4 million fish and fishery products.

"Two local exporters are planning to export their fisher products to west," the executive vice president Han Tun from MFF.

As the plan, prawns are the main export however salmon and tilapia are the high demand.

"Europe and US described requirements for exporters to follow in fishing or farming the products for quality control," Han Tun added, "Myanmar still needs technology and financial support for better quality products. However, we will export to earn the experience."

MFF is planning to develop over 5400 acres of land for saltwater shrimp farming zone in Yangon Region and seeking for local and foreign investors. Others coastal areas will be developed for fish farming in the future.
