Sergei Lavrov: End Myanmar sanctions

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Economic sanctions are no longer needed against Myanmar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

Lavrov met with Wunna Maung Lwin, his Myanmar counterpart, in Naypyitaw, the new capital of the country formerly known as Burma, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

"There is no justification for any kind of sanctions under the current conditions," Lavrov said at a joint news conference.

Lavrov said the two countries will soon be signing a cooperation agreement and setting up a business council.

Myanmar began a transition to democracy in 2010 after decades of military rule. The European Union has lifted sanctions, and the United States has ended an investment ban and some other sanctions.
