Myanmar market filled with illegal shrimp imports

Illegal prawn imports enter Myanmar market every day due to the decline of local production, according to a report by Myanmar Shrimp Association.

In 2012, there are 15 public shrimp hatcheries in freshwater shrimp production sector producing 150 million of shrimp larvae, but the local production could not meet domestic demand and the freshwater shrimp from overseas enter Myanmar market illegally through many ways, according to the report.

The report also says that the seawater prawns production in Rakhine State and Ayeyarwady region has declined from 20 viss per acre to 5 viss per acre, because the farms face difficulties in repairing the breeding system and upgrading the breeding method.  

Myanmar’s seawater shrimp production sector produces mainly tiger prawn [5 percent] and white prawn [95 per cent], but breeding tiger prawns is difficult because it is not easy to get the healthy female shrimps, according to the report.

The association connected to overseas organisations with foreign investment is going to enhance the prawn breeding industry and want to expand foreign markets.
