Eel exports to China highest in 7 years

Eel export to China from 2011 to 2012 posted the highest in seven years, according to a news release from the Myanmar Eel Entrepreneurs Association.

"The eel exports in 2012 were higher than the imposed target. Most of the eels have been exported to China via the border gates such as Muse, Chin Shwe Haw," said Ba Thaw, chairman of the association.

Statistics show that Myanmar exported over 10,000 metric tonnes of eels in the 2011-2012 financial year, which ended on March 31. The country earned over 40 million kyats (US$47,000) and surpassed the original estimated earnings of 25 million kyats ($29,000).

From 2010 to 2011, Myanmar exported nearly 8,000 metric tonnes of eels and earned over 23 million kyats ($25,000). The quantity was lower, but the earnings were better than the 21 million kyats ($24,504) from the 8,800 metric tonnes exported within 2009 to 2010.

Since 1993, China has been a major buyer of Myanmar eels. In 2005, Myanmar started practicing the open tender system for eel exports at the Muse 105-mile border trade zone, the biggest trading point between Myanmar and China.

Although Myanmar eels can only be exported to China at the moment, the Myanmar Eel Entrepreneurs Association has been meeting businessmen from Singapore and South Korea to discuss about eel exports to other countries.
